I really have to stop reading the paper. The other day on the front page of the Globe was a story about the revival of the NEANDERTHAL custom of when a man asks a woman's father for "her hand" in marriage . What is this 1935???? I mean, I know I smoked a lot of pot back in the day but I'm pretty sure we went through woman's liberation and came out on the other side...didn't we?
I realize in some other countries women are still considered to be the property of men . BUT THIS IS AMERICA!!!! AND THERE IT WAS ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THE BOSTON GLOBE!!! ENOUGH ALREADY!!!
Page two of today's Herald "Lawmen battle plague of domestic violence". Well, when you live on a planet where there is a belief that WOMEN ARE SOMEONE'S PROPERTY, there's bound to be some who take that belief literally.
You can hold candlelight vigils until the cows come home BUT until the underlying attitude is addressed there will be women murdered, men taken away in handcuffs, and children left to deal with the repercussions. That's the extreme case; just as troubling are the subtleties.

The news is awful and depressing.. mostly for the public reactions..no one wants to listen to stories of things that are good..they want beatings, accidents, etc...
the herald is a freaking tabloid..ugh..
As for the suitor asking the Father
for permission to marry his Daughter.
I believe this is not a Neanderthal
custom but a respectable jester to
the father who has loved and watched over his daughter since birth.
Womans liberation has no jurisdiction
over "Daddy's little girl"
Just asks any girls Dad..:)
